液压传动系统中的工作油液不仅用来传递能量,同时要对各种元件中零件的活动部位起润滑作用,以防止产生干摩擦,造成零件的严重磨损,影响元件的使用寿命。尤其是当液压系统在高压、高速、高温条件下工作时,更要求油液能有良好的润滑性能。也就是要能够具有高的油膜强度,即耐磨性要高。
(三)良好的防腐蚀性
工作油液的腐蚀性,包括对密封元件的腐蚀性及对金属零件的腐蚀性。
液压阀及其他所有液压元件和系统所用的密封件,都是为了防止油液不应有的外泄漏。密封材料的选择,根据所用工作油液的不同而应有所不同。如采用丁晴橡胶材料的密封件,用矿物油型油液就能很好适应,而用磷酸酯抗燃液压油时,就会使密封件受到腐蚀。腐蚀现象有二种情况;一是使密封材料产生溶胀,软化,二是使密封材料硬化。其结果都使密封件失去密封性能,造成大量外泄漏,使液压系统效率降低,甚至发生故障不能工作。

由于溢流阀溢油口的急速溢油以及系统回油管道的回油冲入油池,都可能使油液产生气泡,混入空气。这将造成执行机构运动的不平稳,甚至引起振动和噪声。
另外,由于空气的混入,在高压下使空气溶解到油液中;在负压下空气又从油液中析出,使油液的体积变化很大。这对系统工作压力变化很大的高压液压系统,或控制精度要求很高的液压伺服系统,将会造成工作的不平稳和动力传递的滞后现象,影响执行机构工作的可靠性和准确性。

液压系统由于管道维护不善等原因,使冷却水、冷凝水混入油液中,生成乳化液,引起油液变质,降低了油液的润滑性和防锈性,使元件的滑动部位产生早期磨损,影响元件的使用寿命,也影响了油液的使用寿命。因此,要求油液对水有良好的分离性能,提高其抗乳化特性。
